I've given up on those cards! There is not one man in my life who fits any of those Hallmark characters. Here's to all the awesome dads who show up for their kids, and who model what it looks like to honor one's best self, grill or no grill. (Also, I laughed out loud at the Bakersfield reference. Our boys have had several soccer tournaments there. Quite the drive.)

Hah! I've given up on these cards too! These days I just end up getting my dad a blank card. 😊And I'm so glad you got the Bakersfield reference 🤣

😂 I enjoyed this...thank God we're not held to the standards of greeting cards!

All you need to be a great dad is the willingness to spend time with your kids and have a good time...so yeah, the Corgi gets it right!🤣

There needs to be a Father’s Day cars with a dad writing or on in his computer, writing all hours. A million dollar idea ;)

Yes, absolutely Jane! You should submit this idea to Hallmark in exchange for some royalties! 😊

Loved this essay, Jake! Hilarious & insightful! Your sweet kiddos are going to love you always because you are always there for them. Now go practice your “Dad jokes” to keep them chuckling (or groaning) as they continue to grow.

Hah! Thank you Terry. I'll definitely keep practicing my dad jokes to keep the kids "entertained" for many years to come 😂

Don't let Hallmark tell you who you should be! Your kids have you as your dad. You are doing the best you can, as all of us parents are. Live up to your own standard. Screw Hallmark!

Yes to the Tim "the tool man" Taylor! (and a shout out to Wishbone as well). Cards like these - and the celebration in general - can be tricky when you are a dad and don't feel like you fit the stereotypes. it is funny though that these cards represent a "father stereotype" of years past. I wonder when the Gen X/Y cards will start rolling out and what will be on them 🤔

So happy you appreciated these references Steve! It's nice to know I'm not the only one who still thinks of them. 😂 And, yes, the greeting card father stereotypes definitely seem like they're remnants from a previous generation, at least a little bit. Those Gen X/Y cards will be interesting indeed! I wonder what Father's Day cards my kids will end up finding at the store when they're in their thirties? Thanks for the thoughtful comment. 😊
